Who We Are
At LORD Sensing, we make tiny sensors and systems that are used in a wide range of applications, including advanced manufacturing, off-highway vehicles, commercial and military manned and unmanned vehicles, civil structures, and down-hole tools. Our sensors have won numerous awards and we pride ourselves on being both innovative and responsive to our customer's unique requirements.
LORD Corporation is headquartered in Cary, North Carolina and is a privately held corporation that was founded in 1924. Our Sensing division is based in Williston, Vermont and began in 1987 as MicroStrain, Inc. Our first sensors were designed for arthroscopic implantation on human knee ligaments; since then, we expanded our product line through continual product improvement, helping us reach all new markets.
As our customer base widened, we continued to innovate by combining multiple sensors along with advanced micro controllers to enhance system performance. We were one of the first sensor companies to add wireless capability so that low power, miniature digital sensors could communicate easily with personal computers and send data to the internet.
As our products became more capable of sampling at high rates in large synchronized networks, it became obvious that managing all the data collected from these devices was no easy task. This led us to develop SensorCloud, giving you the ability to easily store, view, analyze, and monitor your data from anywhere in the world.
Behind the scenes
Quality & Innovation
LORD Sensing products are ISO 9001 compliant. Using a mix of in-house assembly and testing and ISO 9001 certified manufacturers, we offer quality products while maintaining cost efficiencies. The calibration systems we use are traceable to National Institute of Standards and Technology for quality assurance throughout the sensor range.
Our History
-
1987
MicroStrain is founded in Burlington, Vermont. The company's first products are micro-displacement sensors sold for implantable ligament and tendon strain measurement in biomechanical research.
-
1999
MicroStrain's first inertial product, the 3DM, is released. Initially marketed in biomechanical applications, the 3DM is quickly adopted by navigation systems, civil engineering projects, and industrial equipment monitoring. This broke ground for the inertial line of products that are actively developed and now include inclinometers, IMU, AHRS, and GPS systems.
-
2001
MicroStrain's first wireless sensor is released which measures triaxial acceleration. This breakthrough in wireless started an entire line of sensors for various applications. Large networks of wireless nodes can now be sampled simultaneously and utilize acknowledgements to achieve lossless data collection.
-
2011
SensorCloud is released, allowing MicroStrain devices to directly store their data in the cloud, and enabling incredibly fast viewing and analyzing of data.
-
2012
LORD Coporation acquires MicroStrain, Inc. expanding MicroStrain's scientific and engineering skills, while opening new markets for LORD Corporation.
-
2015
MathEngine Notebooks are added as a feature to SensorCloud, empowering users to analyze their data in powerful, new ways.
-
2018
LORD Corporation becomes a $1 Billion company by creating innovative solutions and technologies that add great value for customers.
-
2019
SensorCloud is refreshed with a brand new UI, allowing customers to create Dashboards, easily compare data from multiple devices, and more. The new interface is shared with LORD Sensing's SensorConnect software, providing a consistant user experience with both local and cloud data.
